Rafael Delgado MD, (male) PhD 1996, (RD) is head of the Microbiology Laboratory at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Coordinator of the Infection Division of the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica Hospital 12 de Octubre (i+12) and Associated Professor at the Universidad Complutense School of Medicine in Madrid, Spain.
He did his postdoctoral training at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Genetics at The University of Michigan Medical Center on viral vector design for gene transfer and vaccine development.
His laboratory is involved in the evaluation of new technology for molecular diagnostics in viral infections and participates as a reference lab for evaluation of new platforms for CE registration.
His research interest is focused on viral diagnostics, pathogenesis and antiviral discovery for retrovirus (HIV) and emergent agents (Filovirus and Flavivirus). The laboratory has created a platform for HIV, Ebola and Zika virus research using VLPs than can be used under BSL2-3 conditions thus facilitating diagnostic, pathogenic and antiviral research.
He is author of 90 scientific publications (over 3000 citations, h-index: 28) and has mentored 4 PhD students on HIV and Ebola research. He has been PI of 15 Research Projects with European and domestic funding in competitive calls in the last 10 years.
